The ruins lay 5 km south of Heraklion, once this place could be the ceremonial and political centre of the Minoan civilization in the Bronze Age. The Palace of Knossos is connected with well known legends, such as the myth of the Labyrinth, with the Minotaur, which had the head and tail of a bull and the body of a man, and the story of Daidalos and Ikaros. Despite thousands of years, many parts of the palace complex remained in wonderful state. Knossos is on the tentative list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Rethymno is situated in the half way between Heraklion and the old capital city, Chania on the western part of Crete. Rethymno is a lovely port city with well preserved Venetian and Tukish architecture and cultural influences. One of the must-see attractions is the Rimondi fountain, which was built during the Venetian rule, even nowadays, the fountain still springs water through the three lion heads. The historical buildings of the old town house many picturesque cafés and boutique hotels. Rethymno hosts some of the most beautiful sandy beaches of Crete, turn to east from the old town to reach them.
Bus transportation satisfies most needs on the island. Numerous lines depart from Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno, and Agios Nikolaos, running usually between 6 AM and 11 PM. The majority of lines go on the northern coast in order to serve most resorts.
The biggest taxi stands in Heraklion are located around the bus station and the Morosini fountain.
28 kilometers from Heraklion, in a village, called Fodele a 16th-century painter was born, who was later called as El Greco. In his birthplace, a museum was established.
If you travel with children, Cretaquarium Thalassocosmos can be an exciting programme. The aquarium located in Gournes displays the flora and fauna of the Mediterranean Sea in 32 enormous containers, including shark, octopus, seahorse, and other fish.
Dakos is something which can be considered as the foundation stone of cuisine in Crete. It's a simple but savory and hearty dish: a slice of bread sprinkled with olive oil and tomato sauce, topped with fresh cheese, herbs, and some olives.
