The biggest city of the Netherlands is unique for its houseboats, public transportation on the water and the nearly one million bicycles that are used by the local people. Amsterdam is one of the most romantic European city thanks to its more than 100 km long channel bank and 1281 bridges.
The city district within Singelgracht is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. It was built in the 17th century which is also called the Dutch Golden Age.
Previously, a wax candle factory was working at the place where you can find world-famous museums. The Rijksmuseum is the national museum of Dutch arts and history, the Van Gogh Museum commemorates the brilliant painter and his contemporaries, the Stedelijk Museum shows Dutch design and modern art.
Anne Frank and her family was hiding in this house during WWII, until they were deported to a concentration camp, from where only Anne's father could return after the war. The 13-year old girl started to write her diary here, which was later published as 'The Diary of Anne Frank'. Today the house serves as a museum.
Dam is the historical center of Amsterdam. It got its name from the dam, which controlled the Amstel river here. The Royal Palace is located here, the two main shopping streets of the city arrive at the square. De Wallen, the famous red light district starts just a few corners away.
There are five metro lines in the city, from which the North-South line have been opened recently. From the main railway station, you may get on four lines, however, it mainly serves the outskirts of Amsterdam.
